Mastermind Series

The Sports Master Mind Series uniquely taps into the experience and expertise of a former NHL player, Canadian National team player and NHL 1st round pick, with over 30 years of athletic experience. Brandon Convery has chosen six topics that will uniquely impact any athlete in the world, no matter the sport.

We have all heard that “practice makes perfect.” Perhaps true; however, Brandon passionately believes that an incredibly important driver of success is not practiced – the mental/emotional aspect of the athlete.

In this in this one of a kind series, Brandon will provide the young athlete with the mental and emotional tools that will significantly supplement the physical tools that all athletes work on.

Brandon will share the untold stories that shaped his life and professional career and the greatest life lessons learned along the way from sports – all in a progressive format over six sessions. In an intimate setting, Brandon will open up about his successes, failures, triumphs, and disappointments, and teach each student how to apply each topic to their own season.

2011-2012 Sport Masters Mind Series includes the following six topics:

  • 1. Goal Setting-Identifying Strengths
Goals are great motivators—but to be a master, you have to be flexible and recognize when to change or expect more. The unexpected can rise at any moment. Here Brandon teaches about goal setting, and goal adjustment, and helps athletes identify their strengths through exercises meant to help each player navigate the season, on a monthly basis.

  • 2. Go for Excellence- The #1 Secret of Successful Athletes
You hear it all the time with successful athletes and again with Brandon—a kind of relentlessness, fierceness, and intensity. The great ones don't cut corners; they don't slack off. They perform at the highest possible level, and when the game or training is over, they're eager to do it again, but better. Welcome to the Sports Master Mind Series on excellence, an invitation to bring out your best.

  • 3. The Upside of Challenging Times- Learning, Bouncing back, Progress
We all fall down, it's getting back up that's tricky. Yet every day athletes turn their careers around, get back on track. Failures are the best teachers. Resilience, determination and confidence are tested and strengthened through adversity. With this month's topic we discuss how to position each individual to come back stronger and better prepared.

  • 4. Passion-Persistence-Patience
Passion accelerates progress. With passion, possibilities are boundless. Passion is also contagious, positively impacting teammates, further leading to success. And there's joy in the doing, even if sometimes it doesn't come easy. This month we focus on what we love about the game and talk about the “little things” that make a huge difference.

  • 5. Reinvent Yourself
The first law of sports: Things change—and that includes us. Each player must strive for progress, or risks wasting time and energy trying to keep things the way they were. Top athletes see what's coming with clear eyes. They learn from there past and shed tough times and get ready for new ones. As soon as they meet one challenge, they dream up another. That's how they stay fresh and energized. This month, we learn how to get ready for the next leap, the new season and a chance to reflect on the first half of the season.
